Purwokerto: Growing, Planned, Sustainable

Hi i'm Qanita Radhiya Wafa', Urban and Regional Planning Bachelor Degree at  Universitas Diponegoro.

Exploring the direction of regional development in Purwokerto through spatial planning, infrastructure, public spaces, education, and tourism.

Building a City for Everyone

Purwokerto is the growing activity center of Banyumas Regency. Regional development is not simply about constructing new buildings and roads. It should also ensure that urban spaces are comfortable to live in, accessible, supportive of economic activities, and environmentally sustainable.

Shaping Purwokerto through More Adaptive Spatial Planning

Focus: Detailed Spatial Plans, transportation, the environment, and community participation

Urban growth creates increasingly diverse demands for space. Residential areas, trade and services, public facilities, road networks, and open spaces need to be managed so they can develop in a balanced way. For this reason, spatial plans are an important foundation for determining the direction of Purwokerto’s development.

In August 2026, the Banyumas Regency Government began preparing a revision of the Detailed Spatial Plan (RDTR) for the Purwokerto Urban Area through a public consultation process. The revision aims to align spatial regulations with regional growth and address several urban challenges.

Key Issues to Consider

Urban and Regional Planning Perspective: effective spatial planning connects land-use patterns, transportation networks, public facilities, and environmental capacity. It should also involve the community to ensure that policies reflect residents’ needs.

Therefore, revising the Detailed Spatial Plan is more than a document update. It is an opportunity to guide Purwokerto’s growth toward a more organized, inclusive, and sustainable future.

Purwokerto has the potential to develop as an education center and tourist destination in the southern part of Central Java. Universities, urban facilities, commercial centers, and access to nearby tourist areas such as Baturraden provide a strong foundation for regional development.

In 2025, the Ministry of Public Works’ Regional Infrastructure Development Agency (BPIW) outlined its support for the Purwokerto–Banyumas Integrated City Planning (ICP) program. The development vision aims to create a livable, green, and smart city with strong educational and tourism appeal.

Development Priorities to Strengthen

The development of an education city and tourist destination needs an integrated approach. Economic growth should be balanced with infrastructure provision, environmental management, and the preservation of local identity. This will allow Purwokerto to grow while continuing to meet the needs of its residents.

Urban and Regional Planning Perspective: Integrated City Planning emphasizes coordination across sectors and areas. Campuses, the city center, tourist destinations, residential areas, and transportation networks should be planned as one connected system.
